OTTO KLEMPERER
Concertgebouworkest

Janácek: Sinfonietta

(rec. 11 January 1951)

Bartók: Concerto for Viola and Orchestra

with William Primrose (rec. 10 January 1951)

Schoenberg: Verklärte Nacht

(rec. 7 July 1955)

Klemperer's enormous EMI discography of music from the classical and romantic period let us forget that, especially in his earlier years, he was one of the most prominent champions of modern music. The tapes of these recordings (1951/55) derive from the Dutch radio archive.

"Klemperer´s performance of Verklärte Nacht is a miraculous blend of transparency and expression. This is a most valuable issue. A warm welcome to this German label. I hope to hear more from their small but fascinating catalog." (Fanfare)

"If the first two performances on this CD have classic status, that of Verklärte Nacht is visionary. I have never heard anything like this. This is, in short, one of those indispensable recordings. "
