Klemperer Vol. 2
Live recordings from the Dutch Radio Archive |
This is the only existing Klemperer recording of Mahlerīs Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen. As far as the Mozart and Beethoven symphonies are concerned, they offer an interesting comparison with Klempererīs own studio recordings. These live recordings from Klempererīs pre-EMI period refute the stereotype of the conductorīs heavy diction and slow tempi: here are passionate interpretations, full of tension and dynamics with Toscanini-like rapid tempi. Some passages of the finale in the 7th symphony exceed even Beethovenīs own metronome
markings.
As a whole the performance is very strong, forthright and of high quality. It is a valuable record of Klempererīs early postwar style. the sound is remarkably full and vivid for its period." (Gramophone)
The Mozart G-Minor Symphony is much faster throughout than Klempererīs EMI recording at 33 rpm. This live performance is more human, more felicitous in every way." (Fanfare)
