Erich Kleiber

conducts Waltzes and Overtures

Joh. Strauss, Heuberger, Reznicek, Weber/Berlioz - recorded 1923 - 1933

This is a kind of historical New Year's concert. Erich Kleiber, former director of the Berlin State Opera and creator of Berg's Wozzeck (1925), never lost his love for Vienna, where he was born and grew up in the era of Gustav Mahler. This special link to the old Viennese culture can be heard in his 78 recordings of waltzes and operetta melodies made between 1923 and 1933. Even later in his exile years in South America he could say with good reason: "Where ever I conduct, there is Vienna!". Kleiber's recordings of Viennese music are re-issued here for the first time on CD, with full approval of his son, Carlos Kleiber.

"The acoustical Vox "Blue Danube" is unique to the present selection - and to be honest, it´s so charismatic and involving that I am tempted to recommend the CD for its sake alone." (Gramophone)
