musikalische Archiv-Forschung

This non-profit association was founded in 1982 by musicologists and serious collectors of historical recordings. Information and data exchange between the members led to the idea of publishing historical rarities on a non-profit basis, i.e. commercially less promising recordings, either because of the repertoire or because of a sound quality which would not be accepted by the average music lover.

Thus the label archiphon was created and during the years presented numerous rarities and musical discoveries such as  recordings by Otto Klemperer from the early years of his career, recordings by Rudolf Kolisch and his quartet or a series of radio recordings by Carl Schuricht.

In 2000, the Verein unfortunately had to be dissolved, but the label continued in the hands of its new owner, Note 1 GmbH (Heidelberg),  who was the label's German distributor.

The Verein's archive is now privately held by its former president, Werner Unger, who cares for this homepage and invites collectors and musicologists to participate in continuing the archiphon idea and presenting their scientific work and musical rarities in the internet.

Articles and information related to historical recordings shall be published here (in German only), actually the following items:
